µTorrent

µTorrent is a simple and effective P2P tool, well suited for use with YF.

Configure your µTorrent connection settings similar to this:

If you are a TotalFreedom user, configure one of the ports assigned to you (visible in the Profile panel when you are connected) as the port used for incoming connections. If you are not on the TotalFreedom plan, this setting doesn't matter. Be sure you uncheck UPnP and NAT-PMP. You should not actually have to add µTorrent to the Windows firewall exceptions but it won't hurt either.

Configure your local PC as a SOCKS5 proxy on port 1080, with no authentication. Use it for P2P connections too.

Your global bandwidth limits should match your Internet connection speed and your assigned bandwidth. The value is in kilobytes; Internet providers and Your Freedom specify these values in kilobits. Divide by 8, then use about 90% of the resulting value. Use whatever is smaller, your Internet speed or the Your Freedom speed.

Now move on to the BitTorrent settings:

Set the maximum number of connections to a value below your Your Freedom profile's limit. Leave a bit of headroom for inbound connections and tracker connections! TotalFreedom users might want to use 190, EnhancedFreedom users should use 95, BasicFreeedom users are on the safe side with 45. FreeFreedom users should use 7 or 8.

Everything else is a matter of taste. You should disable local peer discovery though. Contrary to earlier descriptions, DHT does work with Your Freedom but you need a server port forward (i.e. TotalFreedom). If you haven't got one, you might want to disable it.

It is normally not necessary to specify the Your Freedom server's external IP address to report it to the tracker; most if not all trackers are clever enough to learn it from the HTTP request.

Whether or not you enable outgoing encryption is up to you. Enabling it won't hurt, but forcing it might because not all BitTorrent clients support it. Allowing incoming legacy connections (i.e. unencrypted connections) will improve the likelihood of successful inbound connections, it's only relevant if you use server port forward.

Don't forget to configure a server port forward in the Your Freedom client on the Ports panel if you are a TotalFreedom user! Use the same port number you've used when setting up µTorrent for both server port and local port, and use "localhost" as local host. If you are not a TotalFreedom user, doing this is pointless.

This is all. Good luck and happy downloading!
